About the Artist
Trystan Marshall was brought up in the small Cornish village of Stithians, which has always remained closely entwined with pieces produced during his early career. The natural landscape which encompassed his home, including Stithian's Dam, provided a constant source of inspiration. This developed a keen interest and natural questioning of the forms and textures which he later evolved into studies. As he grew and developed his unique approach to describing the abstract environment, Trystan began to explore other local areas to further inspire his work. Kennel Vale Woodland linked by the River Kennel, provided a different perspective and derived some of his 2010 works which have a more raw natural feel.
Being brought up in an environment where passion for art was dominant, Trystan was influenced by the work of his father Andrew Marshall and grandfather Bill Marshall both outstanding potters' in their own right. This influence shaped and honed Trystan's enthusiasm for the appreciation of natural forms and textures. Having studied his father's and grandfather's work in his younger years, his own work has been built from a strong, deep-rooted understanding of the processes and work required, to achieve the highest standards in the sculpting and development of individual pieces.
Trystan has an additional love which presents itself in the form of horticulture, and he made the decision to relocate to Oxford to explore this. He has been able to further develop his passion for organic gardening through this experience, which has also broadened the scope of landscapes he is influenced by. Upon moving back to Cornwall in late 2019, he has rediscovered the natural landscape he always loved and knew. The exploration of both new and old landscape has further inspired Trystan, and a new collection of work will focus on the interactions between water, light and raw forms within the natural landscape of both Oxfordshire and Cornwall.
